Brown Fused Alumina is an artificial abrasive material produced by smelting bauxite in a high-temperature electric arc furnace (above 2000°C). Its primary chemical composition includes aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃ 94.5-97%) with trace amounts of titanium oxide, silicon oxide, etc. With a Mohs hardness of 9.0 and brownish crystal structure, BFA exhibits high toughness, heat resistance (up to 1850°C), and excellent self-sharpening properties, making it one of the most widely used basic abrasives in industrial applications.

In industrial practices, BFA is processed into grinding wheels, cutting discs, blasting abrasives, and other products due to its outstanding impact resistance and cost-effectiveness. Key applications include:

• Rough Grinding: Coarse grinding and deburring of steel, castings, and stone materials
• Refractory Materials: Kiln linings and reinforcing aggregates for castables
• Surface Treatment: Rust removal for ships and steel structures via sandblasting

Compared to white fused alumina, BFA contains slightly higher iron/titanium impurities (Fe₂O₃ 0.5-1.5%) but generates sharper edges when fractured, making it particularly suitable for heavy-duty grinding. With lower production costs, BFA meets over 80% of conventional grinding needs and serves as a highly cost-efficient solution for machining, automotive manufacturing, and construction industries.
